Coronavirus: India enters 'total lockdown' after spike in cases

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has imposed a nationwide lockdown in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
The restrictions came into force at midnight local time (18:30 GMT) and will be enforced for 21 days.
"There will be a total ban on venturing out of your homes," Mr Modi said in a televised address.
He appealed for people not to panic - but crowds quickly mobbed stores in the capital, Delhi, and other cities.
Correspondents say it is not clear how - or even if - people will now be allowed out to buy food and other essentials.
The new measures follow a sharp increase in cases in recent days. There have been 519 confirmed cases across India and 10 reported deaths.
India - which has a population of 1.3bn - joins a growing list of countries that have imposed similar measures.
Nearly 400,000 people have tested positive for the virus worldwide, and around 17,000 have died.

Sports ministry shuts down Lagos National Stadium

The National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos was on Monday shut down following the coronavirus outbreak. Bode Durotoye, the Liaison Officer of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the directive was from Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development. Durotoye said the facility would be re-opened to the public when the situation improves. “I got the directive from the minister this morning (Monday) that we should shut down the National Stadium in Lagos temporarily in line with the Federal Government’s directive that all social gatherings should be suspended for now,” he said. NAN reports that the Lagos State Government had directed that not more than 50 people should gather at any public place for now. Lagos coronavirus cases may rise to 39,000 – Commissioner

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has said the state may witness up to 39,000 cases of coronavirus. Abayomi at a briefing on Friday urged people to adhere to the social distancing advice of the state government to check the spread of the disease. He said, “Our mathematical modelling shows that the worst-case scenario is that we may see up to 39,000 cases in Lagos, but if everyone practises good social distancing, the figure will be limited to 13,000. “If we add social distancing to active contact tracing, then we will be able to bend the curve further.
