The United States has asked medical professionals seeking to work in America to apply for a work visa at the nearest US Embassy as part of measures to strengthen the health system to contain the coronavirus pandemic in the country. The government in a statement published on www.travel.state.gov on Friday, advised foreign medical professionals already in the US to consult with their sponsors to extend their programmes. According to World Health Organisation statistics as of 12:00 pm on Friday, 63,570 people have been infected with the virus and nearly 884 have died in the US which is quickly becoming the new epicenter of the outbreak. Sports ministry shuts down Lagos National Stadium

The National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos was on Monday shut down following the coronavirus outbreak. Bode Durotoye, the Liaison Officer of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the directive was from Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development. Durotoye said the facility would be re-opened to the public when the situation improves. “I got the directive from the minister this morning (Monday) that we should shut down the National Stadium in Lagos temporarily in line with the Federal Government’s directive that all social gatherings should be suspended for now,” he said. NAN reports that the Lagos State Government had directed that not more than 50 people should gather at any public place for now. The liaison officer said the steps were part of governments’ initiatives to curtail the spread of the virus in the country. Lagos coronavirus cases may rise to 39,000 – Commissioner

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has said the state may witness up to 39,000 cases of coronavirus. Abayomi at a briefing on Friday urged people to adhere to the social distancing advice of the state government to check the spread of the disease. He said, “Our mathematical modelling shows that the worst-case scenario is that we may see up to 39,000 cases in Lagos, but if everyone practises good social distancing, the figure will be limited to 13,000. “If we add social distancing to active contact tracing, then we will be able to bend the curve further.
